Offshore Fishing Guide

THIS GUIDE WAS ORIGINALLY WRITTEN 4/19/2008 by (me) Eleftheria
Some of the information in this guide may be out dated.
SOME information was updated 4/2016 and some updated 3/31/2017 and more updated 3/16/18 but not all info is guaranteed up to date.

This is a guide for OFFSHORE fishing only.
High seas fishing was removed from the game.

The initial information I used in creating this guide, came from the original fishing guide written by solarrocker.

In 2008 I added 6 missing cities, discovered the names of the fish in each city (Added a "new" marine product to the list), added more "other fished up items", and rearranged the cities in the same order as the Ultimate Guide To Cities.

Though I have added shell information, this information is for fishing only.  For a complete list of shells including beach, island, and city locations go to the Updated Shell Guide:

Learning the Fishing skill and stunts

If you do not know how to learn a skill or how to buy stunts, please read

The Skills System Guide
http://vc.forum.igg.com/topic?fcid=83&ctid=59182

You must learn the skill "Fishing" before you can fish.

Production Skills and the Use of Multiple characters

*** Because only 5 Profession points can be put toward Profession Production Skills;
It is recommended you create different characters (ie. "Alts" ) on different accounts to have combinations of the 15 different Profession skills.

Create them on different accounts w/ different emails so that;
1) you can run more than one at a time; you can be leveling your main while one is fishing.
2) this way you can trade between characters - not logging in and out and having someone hold your items while you log.
3) you have extra storage space and load - one character keeps fishing items one keeps mining items one keeps logging items etc...

Eventually, You will probably want to designate one character as your main Fishing Alt, one as your main Logging Alt, One For Mining, One for Planting, One for Uniform creation etc..

Click ctrl +S in game to see the 15 Profession skills.

Production skill points are granted when you reach various level of Profession Skill.  Even though Profession skill level now goes up to 170, Skill Tutor skill levels are still maxed at 120.  The 5th profession production point is granted when reaching profession level 120.
See below for more on Production points and Stunts - a sub class of skills

Leveling fast and easy

Normally leveling fishing is an EXTREMELY slow process.

However, a newly created character is given 5 "Reward Gold".
You can exchange one gold for a pack that will instantly take your fishing skill to level 100.

You will first have to learn the fishing skill at the skill tutor.
Then Immediately exchange for the pack.  Click the pack to raise your level to 100.
Use your (new character) free reward gold at the Athens dock area "Ability Book Exchange Master".

Though Skill Experience Scrolls are still sold, I recommend you use reward gold to take most or all skills to 100 before using them.
* Except Eloquence - you get a free scroll in the beginner quest line for this.

You can buy more Reward Gold for 80 Mall Points each in the on line item mall (not in the in game item mall).
Voyage Century Item Mall LINK

Profession "Fishery Skill"

Cntrl+s >> Production tab
You must have a profession point toward "Fishery Skill" if you want to co collect; Black Pearls, Coral and Pearls.  These 3 items are only available while fishing in the Fishing Pass Area while using a Fishery Passport (Fishery Passport is available in item mall).
You must also be level 101 or higher in fishing skill to collect Black Pearls, Coral and Pearls.

Learning/buying Fishing stunts at skill tutor

There are 3 fishing Stunts you can buy at the skill Tutor.
The most helpful stunt is probably "fishing promotion".  It will increase the load you ship can carry and transfers with the character and not the ship.
But as a fisherman character Maintenance of fishing net will save you in buying Nets
Wear a Master Labor suit and you will not have to worry about stamina.

** Notes on nets see below in "basics"

The 3 stunts (above) can be bought at the skill tutor if you have an unused stunt point and you are at the fishing level where the skill is unlocked.
You will not be able to Max all 3 stunts.  You only get 31 stunt points to spend, and would need 36 to max them all. (you can spend 12 stunt points total on each stunt. See chart below for when spending and purchasing is available)
*There are no Special sub skills for Fishing - Special sub skills are for weapons like Soul of saber lvl 1 and 2
However lvl 11 stunt can only be purchased after level 61 and level 12 after 110.

charts from DSOFA

Fishing Skill points

*** Skill Phases were removed from game ***

CAUTION; The Item Mall still sells phase books and skill manuals based on phases.
DO NOT BUY THEM

The Maximum level of a production skill is 120

Basics

To begin Offshore fishing:
1) make sure you have a fishing net equipped on your ship
2) Talk to the docker and select  sail "offshore"
3) sail until you are on top of, or extremely close to, a "shoal" (hold Alt key to see the words on the water)
4) stop sailing ("parking" on or nearby the shoal)
5) click the area where the word "shoal" is.  White words in chat will tell you you have started fishing.

Read further in this guide for hints and suggestions how to fish more efficiently/effectively.

Fishing net levels :

The level of your fishing skill affects the level of fish and materials you can catch/collect.
But so can a fishing net level (tested with lvl 120 fishing skill).
I have not tested if it affects the level of fish but I would assume it does.

Level 1 = Skill level 1 needed for use - durability 250 - catches level 1, 2, 3 fish and items*, Pearls, Black Pearls, Coral & lvl 1-3 shells.

Level 4 = Skill level 31 needed for use - durability 350 - catches level 1 - 7? fish and items*, level 6 & 7 Eaglewood and Cold Iron, Pearls, Black Pearls, Coral & lvl 1-7 Shells

Level 7 = Skill level 61 needed for use - durability 500 - catches level  1 - 10 fish and items*, level 6 -10 Eaglewood and Cold Iron, Pearls, Black Pearls, Coral and all levels of shells.

Level 11 = Skill level 101 needed for use - durability 1000 - catches level 1 - 10 fish and items*, level 6 -10 Eaglewood and Cold Iron, Pearls, Black Pearls, Coral and all levels of shells.

* items = timber, ore, or cloth (note; highest level item via fishing is level 8)
** see the Shell guide for shell level and net recommendations

***With 12 points toward "Maintenance of fishing net" and a lvl 120 Fishing skill character and catching all items (*possible) except fish in the fishing pass area:
Net durability and lasting time ranges in measured 1 hour test times ranged from 37 durability used per hour up to 46 per hour. Average was probably about 44 or 45 but I did not take enough data to make certain of the number.

*items caught can depend on net level but it does not seem to change durability usage rate.
All 4 levels of net tested on this same character

# Nets needed for a 168 hour pass

So if a net looses durability at 45 per hour, you use lvl 11 nets, and you use a 168 hour pass;
one net last 22.222 hrs...
You will need: 168/22.22 = 8 level 11 nets per 168 hour fishing passport.

**Caution**

If the durability on your net runs out and you are in the fishing pass area you will no longer collect items AND you will continue to LOSE TIME on your fishing pass.

Types of Eaglewood & Cold Iron

When you reach high enough level of fishing skill you can catch cold iron and eaglewood.
These resources are needed to craft high level weapons, uniforms, special figureheads and to build these lvl 10 Tortuga ships and higher. (Catch them in Passport area and see city lists below)

In-game Names & Levels for Eaglewood (Thanks to Ranjab)
Normal Eaglewood LvL 6
Secondary Eaglewood LvL 7
High-level Eaglewood LvL 8
Superior Eaglewood LvL 9
eaglewood LvL 10 (for labor suits and?)
Rare Eaglewood LvL 10 (for lvl 10 complex)

In-game Names & Levels for Cold Iron (Thanks to Ranjab)
Normal Cold Iron LvL 6
Secondary Cold Iron LvL 7
High-level Cold Iron LvL 8
Superior Cold Iron LvL 9
cold iron of the deep sea LvL 10 (for labor suits and?)
Rare Cold Iron LvL 10 (for lvl 10 ingot)

** Note that there are 2 types of level 10s.
Rare Cold Iron and Rare Eaglewood are rare even in Fishery Passport Zone.
(MUST MUST MUST have level 61+ fishing and net!
With a 31 net you will fail a lot and only get Normal and Secondary - level 6&7).

Other information you should know

When you fish, so you don't have to keep throwing fish overboard:  fill your goods compartment with trader goods!  You will still get fishing experience!
For a more detailed explanation and how to do it: read the section "How to fish for shells" in the Shell guide.
http://vc.forum.igg.com/topic?fcid=83&ctid=25744&fcp=11

I will also note, you will catch single provisions and single normal Cannonballs in every city along with what is listed below. (But not in the passport area)

Fishery Passport

A Fishery passport can be bought from the item mall

* the 168 hour Passport will go on sale from time to time in the "Hot Sale Promotion" for 75 IM Points.

There is only one Fishing area you can enter.

There are 2 types of shoals in the Fishing passport area.
Hold the "alt" key to see where the shoals are in the passport area.

"Special Fish"
"Shoal"

Both Shoals drop:

  • Level 6-10 Cold Iron & Rare Cold Iron
  • Level 6-10 Eaglewood & Rare Eaglewood
  • Laciniate-Conch Shells level 9
  • Precious Wentletrap Shells level 6
  • White Fin Dolphin (lvl 9)
  • Sea Horse (lvl 8)
  • Ratfish (lvl 6)

Special Shoals also drop (you must have a profession skill point designated to fishery skill to collect these items)

  • Black Pearl
  • Pearl
  • Coral

As for where the shoals are... their locations change after every maintenance so you just have to hold the alt key and look, then sail to the one you want.

Important things to know.

  • The passport area can be reach from the Collecting field conservator who is standing near the suburbs in Athens, Seville, Cape Town and Zhigu.
  • You equip the passport in the same place you do your sewing kit, scope or alchemy bottle
  • ***The timing starts when you enter but will STOP when you exit or sign offline.  You can go do whatever you want while online, as long as you are not in the passport area the timer will be stopped.
  • You can only collect what your study skill allows you to collect (the rules for collecting don't change simply because you are in there)
  • There are no monsters or PVP (perfectly safe)
  • Sources do not run out (Fish the same shoal for hours and hours)

Quests that give Fishing Experience:

** Ability quests were removed***

***Seville fishing quests and HIGH SEAS FISHING removed from game****

Do the fishing quests in the Voyagers Times.

Experience with out working
You can also gain experience by not fishing.
You can use a 6 hour experience scroll from the item mall or a 12 hour improvement tome from the Voucher Exchanger in Seville or Tiger Totem exchanger in Barcelona City.
You must stand still or be off line for 6 or 12 hours when you use them. (you can move but will loose any experience you might have gotten in that time frame)
This scroll will not give experience while chopping/timber-felling.  It can not be used with a double. triple or fourfold experience scroll.  It can not be used with a small, regular, or great blessed pellet.

**Phase 3 info removed... I do not think you need to pay the extra  for phase 3 items anymore, just use regular scrolls

Tips

Don't forget to bring SP pots, wear a labor uniform (w/SP regeneration), wear jewelry with sp  etc...
